John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck (1902–1968) to jeden z najwybitniejszych amerykańskich pisarzy XX wieku. W świadomości czytelników i krytyków zaistniał po publikacji "Tortilla Flat" (1937), dzieła osadzonego w ukochanej przez niego Kalifornii, która posłużyła także jako tło jego najbardziej znanych utworów. Należą do nich "Grona gniewu" (1939), poruszająca powieść drogi z okresu wielkiego kryzysu, oraz "Na wschód od Edenu" (1952), pełna biblijnych odniesień saga rodziny Trasków. W 1940 roku Steinbeck otrzymał Nagrodę Pulitzera za "Grona gniewu", a w 1962 roku Nagrodę Nobla za całokształt twórczości. Czytelnicy cenili go za wnikliwą krytykę amerykańskiego mitu i sympatię dla zwykłych ludzi, krytycy zarzucali mu jednak przesadne zaangażowanie polityczne i ckliwy sentymentalizm.
W Polsce nie wydano dotychczas żadnej książki krytycznoliterackiej poświęconej wyłącznie dziełom amerykańskiego noblisty. Prezentowany tom, wpisując się w międzynarodowy renesans twórczości Steinbecka, przypomina jego postać i dorobek pisarski.

One of the most prominent American writers of the 20th century. Author of many novels, including "Tortilla Flat" (1937), "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939), and "East of Eden" (1952). In 1940, Steinbeck received the Pulitzer Prize (for "The Grapes of Wrath") and, in 1962, the Nobel Prize (for all his writings). Readers have valued Steinbeck for his insightful critique of the American Dream and for his heartfelt depictions of common people. However, critics have accused him of excessive political engagement and sentimentalism. No works of literary criticism devoted solely to Steinbeck have been published in Poland until now. This volume, participating in the international revival of critical interest in the work of this American writer, reminds the reader of the significance of Steinbeck’s literary output.
